After over ten years of planning, consulting, designing and fundraising, Sussex Community Development Association (SCDA) is proud to announce the start of building works for the Newhaven Youth Centre. Local young people gathered on 3rd September 2019 for the ‘Breaking the Ground’ ceremony at the site on Denton Island, Newhaven.
Also present were the Mayor of Newhaven, Graham Amy; Robin Furber, Patron of SCDA; Jane Haddock, the National Lottery Community Fund; Alan Orchard, Faithorn Farrell Timms LLP; Caroline Fraser, Kirkland Fraser Moor; Stephen Harkness, HT Partnership LLP; Viki Ashby, i-Rock and the construction team from Douch and the SCDA Youth Team.
The celebration marked the beginning of the much needed Youth Centre – the only dedicated purpose built centre for young people in Newhaven.
Funding was successfully secured in 2018 from the National Lottery Community Fund, which together with funding from LandAid and Newhaven Town Council funds this exciting project. Members of Newhaven Young People’s Forum have contributed to the design of this unique building for future generations of young people, who will benefit from a dedicated, open-access safe space. There will be a wide range of activities provided within the space, including music, art, mental health and well-being support and Information Advice and Guidance (IAG) services.
