Café culture takes hold at Seaside Recreation Ground

Another step has been taken to enhance the community appeal of Seaside Recreation Ground, with the opening of the Paws Awhile café.

Refreshments are available, seven days a week, from midday until 6pm. All PPE and social distancing measures are in place to ensure public safety.

Devonshire ward councillor, and Mayor of Eastbourne, Steve Wallis, said he was delighted to see a disused changing room building converted into a café offering hot and cold drinks, ice cream, light refreshments and sweets.

“The changing rooms had fallen into disrepair and were in need of some TLC,” Cllr Wallis said. “It was not the most attractive structure, so I was delighted to be able to donate £1,100 from the council’s devolved budget to help bring the tea room to life. I would also like to thank the Friends of Seaside Rec for all their hard work, dedication and commitment over the recent years, which has resulted in major positive change for this much-loved green space.”

The recreation ground has undergone significant improvements over recent years, with new play equipment, all-weather pathways, new trees and shrubs. Most of the work has been overseen by the Friends of Seaside Rec www.friendsofseasiderec.co.uk

The tea café grant was also supported by ward councillors Margaret Bannister and Stephen Holt.
