Councillors at Eastbourne Borough Council have paid tribute to Honorary Alderman Aubrey Vickers, who has died following a short illness.
Aubrey Vickers was recognised with the title of Honorary Alderman in 2006 to mark many years of distinguished service at Eastbourne Borough Council, including periods when he was Leader of the Council and Mayor of Eastbourne.
Councillor David Tutt, Leader of Eastbourne Borough Council, said: “I will remember Aubrey as a good friend, as I am sure others will. I last spoke to him a few weeks ago and, as always, he was keen to know what was happening in the town, asking me many questions about both people and projects.
“I was delighted when he became an Honorary Alderman, it was a most deserved acknowledgement of his long and dedicated service in Eastbourne. He will be sadly missed.”
Aubrey Vickers was a councillor between June 1973 and May 1993 and also served as a member of the Council of the County Borough of Eastbourne from May 1954 and an Alderman of that Council from May 1970 until March 1974. He also served on East Sussex County Council.
Former borough councillor and Chairman of East Sussex County Council, Councillor David Elkin, said: “I remember Aubrey most fondly. He was a terrific mentor to all the young councillors, always very professional, a stickler for detail and never left anything to chance.
“He really cared about people and doing his best for them, a true gentleman and outstanding stalwart of our town.”
