Six months free parking in Newhaven Town Centre

Newhaven Enterprise Zone and Lewes District Council have announced that two car parks in Newhaven will remove charges to help support local businesses by encouraging shoppers to explore the town’s shops and restaurants.
Dacre Road multi-storey car park and Lower Place car park will be free for a six-month period thanks to a £5,000 donation from Newhaven Enterprise Zone.
Councillor James MacCleary Leader of Lewes District Council and ward councillor for Newhaven South, said:  “I am determined to find ways to support our local businesses through this really challenging time. Making our two main car parks free, even for a limited time, is something that many have tried and failed to do. I’m really pleased to be able to announce this as it is the sort of support our local businesses have been asking for.”
“Obviously there is a cost attached and I’m grateful that Newhaven Enterprise Zone has agreed to cover the cost. It’s a great incentive for shoppers to explore the town and support local independent shops and restaurants.”
With the free parking available from 16 December 2020 visitors to the town are also reminded to continue to observe social distancing while out and about completing their Christmas shopping.
Graham Peters, Chair of Newhaven Enterprise Zone, said: “This is fantastic news for Newhaven and its local businesses. Businesses have taken a real battering during the coronavirus pandemic and we want to do all we can to support our traders.
“We hope that people will take advantage of the free parking over the next six months and help our businesses to navigate through these challenging times.”
Mike Shorer, President of Newhaven Chamber of Commerce, said: “Free parking is one Christmas present everyone is pleased to get.  Businesses in the town have been hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic and we are doing everything we can to support them. I encourage people to come and visit the town to see what’s on offer.”
