Following government legislation to prepare for every eventuality in the Brexit negotiations Maria Caulfield has confirmed there are currently no plans for a lorry park in Newhaven or East Sussex.
Statutory Instrument 928 was introduced to enable the Secretary of State for Housing Communities and Local Government to approve the building of lorry parks if it is felt that they are required. It does not guarantee lorry parks in the areas specified, nor does it come with any plans for specific sites anywhere in the country. These are contingency plans to ensure smooth trading in the event of no deal. It is right and responsible that the government plans for every possible outcome.
Maria Caulfield MP said “There are no plans for a lorry park in Newhaven. The legislation allows for a lorry park in East Sussex should one ever one be needed in the future but there are no plans for a lorry park in Newhaven or anywhere else in East Sussex. The port in Newhaven is installing customs checks within the port and these will be ready by December.”
