Liberal Democrat County Councillors have tabled a Notice of Motion for the next meeting of East Sussex County Council on 13 October calling for local authorities to be able to make their own decisions about whether or not to continue with virtual meetings after May 2021. The Conservative administration that runs the County Council is recommending the council to reject this.
Councillor David Tutt, Leader of the Liberal Democrat group comments:
“It seems that the Conservatives prefer zooming round the county in their cars to Zoom meetings!
Since lockdown, remote working has been shown to be a very effective way for the Council to conduct its business. All of us who are concerned about climate change should be thinking carefully about any un-necessary travel”.
Councillor Kathryn Field adds:
“All we are asking is for local authorities to have discretion about whether or not to continue with virtual meetings. It is astonishing that the Conservatives are not even prepared to consider this. We still have no idea whether or not the pandemic will be over by May 2021 and it is irresponsible not to consider the public health issues around un-necessary travel as well as environmental concerns”.
